Mick Jagger, the latest victim of Twitter death hoax

Mick Jagger

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger became the latest victim of the Twitter death hoax after 'RIP Mick Jagger' turned up on the Trending Topics list on Wednesday. With the microblogging site set on fire by tweets on Mick Jagger's hoax death, the fans did not take it well.
Killer16Bars wrote, "RIP Mick Jagger trending is not even remotely funny."
Another tweet said, "Hey I just saw that RIP Mick Jagger is trending no doubt some 'bleiber' started it out of spite towards a truly talented MAN."

'Bleiber' refers to fans of Justin Beiber, who also happened to be the victim of a Twitter death hoax last month.
Among other victims of phony fatalities were Don Shula, the American football cornerback and coach, and Hollywood stars such as Owen Wilson, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Stephenie Meyer, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Bill Cosby and Charlie Sheen

However, as is the case with almost all hoax trending topics, 'RIP Mick Jagger' also elicited some humorous and extremely entertaining tweets. Steve Death (@Its_Death) posted, "RIP Mick Jagger? No, no, no. He's not dead. He just looks like he is." Lord_G_Almighty tweeted, "Just because there's more meat on a chariot's whip than on Mick Jagger, doesn't mean he's dead. RIP Twitter Sanity."

Mick Jagger was in the news last for the impressive performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The 67-year-old rockstar paid tribute to singer/legend Solomon Burke, the 'King of Rock 'n' Soul' who passed away last year, with a rendition of 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love'.
His performance was spectacular as the veteran rocked seemed to be in the element with the energy levels to strut back and forth on stage in his signature swagger.

Brazilian star Ronaldo to announce retirement

Three-time FIFA player of the year Ronaldo will announce his retirement from football on Monday, according to a Brazilian newspaper.
"It's time," Ronaldo was quoted as saying by the website of the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper on Sunday. "I can't keep going. I wanted to continue but I can't. I think about making a play but I can't execute it."
Ronaldo's agent, Fabiano Farah, didn't confirm the report but told local media that it is a possibility. Corinthians has announced a news conference for Monday afternoon at the team's headquarters, without giving further details.
Last week, the 34-year-old Ronaldo was heavily blamed by fans for Corinthians' disappointing elimination from the Copa Libertadores, Latin America's most important competition and the only major tournament the Brazilian club is yet to win.
Supporters damaged players' cars and threw rocks at the team's bus, and Ronaldo said at the time that the fan violence made him consider putting an end to his career.
He had been expected to keep playing until the end of the year, but he is visibly out of shape with his physical condition having deteriorated. He has been struggling to play at a high level and hadn't scored a goal since last year.
If the retirement is confirmed, Ronaldo will be ending a stellar 18-year career.
He played in three World Cups and remains the tournament's all-time scoring leader with 15 goals. He helped Brazil win the title in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, scoring twice in the final.
Ronaldo thrived in Europe after leaving Cruzeiro to PSV Eindhoven in 1993, starring for Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan before returning to Brazil at the beginning of 2009 to recover from the third serious knee injury of his career. He won the FIFA player of the year award in 1996, 1997 and 2002.
Ronaldo scored 62 goals in 97 internationals with Brazil, but was never called up again to the national team after a disappointing performance at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. There were calls for his return to the squad after he helped Corinthians win the 2009 Brazilian Cup, but he was never able to get back in shape.
Ronaldo brought a lot of sponsors to Corinthians and is expected to remain linked to the club's football operations, at least until his contract is set to expire at the end of the year.
His announcement to stop playing would come two days after former Brazil teammate Roberto Carlos said he was leaving the club because he and his family were being threatened by fans after the Copa Libertadores elimination.

Albert Pujols rejects Cardinals offer

Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols received and rejected a contract proposal from St. Louis two weeks ago and there has been no progress in the talks since then, a source told us
Barring a last-minute deal, the 31-year-old Pujols will make an announcement on Tuesday ceasing negotiations, according to USA Today, which was the first to report the Cardinals' offer had been rejected.
Pujols previously said that if a deal was not made by the time he reports for spring training on Wednesday, he will not negotiate again this season.
After he begins spring training, Pujols does not want his agent, Dan Lozano, to discuss a contract with the Cardinals because he doesn't want to have any distractions, a stance he has taken throughout his career.
Manager Tony La Russa addressed the issue Sunday at Cardinals camp in Jupiter, Fla.
"This is a spectacular distraction potentially," he was quoted as saying by USA Today. "We won't allow it to be."
The understanding within the St. Louis front office is that Pujols will not accept any trade going forward, sources told Olney on Jan. 29. He has the right to veto any trade proposal, and would do so.
This means there are only two possible results in the negotiations in the Pujols talks: Either he signs a contract extension with the Cardinals, or he will become a free agent this coming fall.
What happens after that remains to be seen, but the choices facing the Cardinals are expensive in different ways. Either St. Louis will negotiate a deal along the lines of what Pujols has asked for -- probably something in the neighborhood of the 10-year, $275 million deal that Alex Rodriguez signed with the Yankees in fall 2007 -- or the Cardinals will pay for the backlash after Pujols walks away.
Pujols led the National League with 42 homers last season and won his first league RBI title with 118. He also tied Matt Holliday for the team batting lead at .312.

Goal of the year: Wayne Rooney to win over Man City

Each time Manchester United and Manchester City face each other, we're left to wonder if this will be the turning point in the rivalry, the match we look back on and say this was when City started to dominate. It seems inevitable, given the vast resources being poured into the blue side of Manchester. But that moment will have to wait, all because of an extraordinary goal from Wayne Rooney.
It was a pivotal day in the title race, no doubt about it. And Rooney, who's not done much by his high standards for the first two-thirds of the season, has all but erased any ill will and disappointment with one transcendent tally in the 77th minute.
About twelve yards out, level with the left-hand post and with his back to goal, Rooney reacted to a deflected delivery from Nani with an overhead kick into the top right-hand corner of the net. City keeper Joe Hart could only watch as the ball -- and his team's title aspirations -- whizzed by him.
Goal of the game. Goal of the season. Biggest goal of Rooney's career. "I think so," Rooney told Sky Sports when asked if it was the best goal of his career. "I saw it come into the box and thought, 'Why not?' Thankfully it finished up in the top corner.

Cavaliers stop 26-game losing streak with OT win over Clippers

Cleveland Cavaliers' Antawn Jamison (4) reacts after making a basket in overtime of an NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, in Cleveland. Nearly two months after it started, the Cavaliers stopped their NBA-record losing streak at 26 games on Friday night with a 126-119 win in overtime against the Los Angeles Clippers.  Daniel Gibson slipped an expensive gold chain over his head and touched its dangling diamond-studded medallion.
Looking up at the crush of cameras, he took a deep breath and exhaled.
"I can smile again," he beamed. "It feels pretty good. Winning is a precious feeling."
The losing streak -- so long, so embarrassing, so hard to stop -- is over.
Finally. Barely.
Nearly two months after it started innocently, the Cavaliers stopped their NBA-record skid at 26 games Friday night with a 126-119 win in overtime against the Los Angeles Clippers, who did all they could to extend Cleveland's winter misery.
The Cavs, who had become a national joke as the losses piled up, won for the first time since Dec. 18 and just the second time in 38 games. They had to go an extra five minutes to ensure they didn't set the mark for the longest skid in pro sports history.
They'll gladly settle with tying the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the worst streak among the four major sports.
It's one they didn't want to own, and they played like it.

NBA hits Chris Paul with $15,000 fine

New Orleans Hornets star Chris Paul has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for verbal abuse of a game official following a loss to the New Jersey Nets.
NBA vice president Stu Jackson announced the fine on Friday.
Paul missed a shot late in regulation Wednesday night that gave New Jersey a chance to force overtime, then turned the ball over with 19 seconds left and the Hornets trailing by two. His attempt at a buzzer-beating 3-pointer bounced out and New Orleans lost 103-101.
The four-time All-Star guard finished 4 for 15 from the field and turned the ball over seven times in the game. He said afterward that he felt "like this was my loss."

18 days of protest culminate in Mubarak's now ended and people free

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down Friday and handed over power to the military, his nearly three decades of iron rule ended by a groundswell of popular protests that began January 25.
In a somber one-minute announcement on state television, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak's resignation and said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will "run the affairs of the country."
As Suleiman spoke, deafening cheers erupted among tens of thousands of Egyptians who thronged the streets of Cairo. It was a moment they had sought throughout long, often tense days of demonstrations -- some of them violent -- that demanded Mubarak's departure. Protesters on the streets had expressed concerns that the strongman would attempt to flee the country with looted money.
It was also a moment that many in the Arab world's powerhouse nation had not dared contemplate.
Chants of "Egypt is free!" and "God is great!" rose from the crowds, dizzy in the honeymoon of their success. Some waved Egyptian flags; others honked horns; still others set off fireworks as they savored the scene.
Two major bridges over the Nile River resembled congested parking lots, and partiers packed streets throughout Cairo. The state-run Middle East News Agency said some people had passed out from joy and others had suffered heart attacks.

Mark Buehrle very critical of Michael Vick

Chicago White Sox pitcher and animal rights activist Mark Buehrle told MLB.com recently that there were times this season he wished Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick would get hurt.
In 2007, Vick was convicted of a felony related to a dogfighting ring and served 19 months in prison.
"He had a great year and a great comeback, but there were times where we watched the game, and I know it's bad to say, but there were times where we hope he gets hurt," Buehrle told MLB.com. "Everything you've done to these dogs, something bad needs to happen to these guys."
At some point after the story was posted on MLB.com, the quotes were removed from the story, but the writer, Scott Merkin, had posted them on his Twitter account.
After serving his prison time, Vick was signed by the Eagles in 2009. This past season he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year after making the Pro Bowl with the Eagles.
Buehrle and his wife, Jamie, who have three dogs, are active in promoting canine rights and have partnered with the White Sox on a program called "Sox for Strays," which hosts area animal rescue groups during the season at U.S. Cellular Field.
Jamie Buehrle made news in December when she helped save a dog who was found wandering the streets in St. Louis with an arrow sticking out of its abdomen. The Buehrles donated money to help pay the dog's veterinarian bills and, through Facebook, found a home for the dog.
